Music Video Research - Gorillaz

This is a music video for Gorillaz - 'Feel Good Inc.' which is part of a series produced by the band which creates a story for each album where the characters are in different situations such as in their new album Plastic Beach.

Cinematography:
This clip is an animated music video that also incorporates real clips. As it is an animated music video their are varying shot types used such as close ups (8), mid shots (7) and long establishing shots (1). As this is an animated video there is a lot more that can be done with the camera than if using a normal camera and trying to create a set. It is also a lot cheaper. In spite of this there are several interesting shots used such as shot 4 where get a point of view shot looking down the guitar which is very effective as it shows the chords being played and this type of shot is also used on games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Sound:
As you can guess the sound for the video comes from the song but there are also some non-diegetic sounds such as the sound of the helicopter which fly's past during the video. The lip syncing that occurs in the video is all in time which is hard to do considering it is an animated video.

Mise-en-scene:
In this video there are several different settings like the city (1) where it looks like a typical city and the high rise building (2) which is one of the main settings for this animated video. It is a large room populated with the bands characters and fans of the band light with dull red lighting with lots of black showing that his is a dark song. The other location is the floating island where Noodle is playing the acoustic guitar which is quite a bright setting although at the end it is over taken by the dark ominous clouds.

Editing:
Although this is an animated musiv video there are still some editing techniques used such as the over laping of two shots (3) which shows the emotion of the character although a long shot is being used. This has been used in other very successful music videos such as Queens - 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
